Ms J’s CV Story

By : MG Virdina J

What is an adult? An adult is a person who is grown up completely. The person is already past the child stage. It is the phase after being a teenager. Once someone reaches adulthood, that person typically no longer has to take directions from a parent or guardian, but rather can make decisions for themselves. Legally speaking, adulthood is reached at 18 in most countries. (source : Wikipedia)

Then how about prepared adult? Honestly I have no idea yet… But instead, let me share my CV in a story 😊

I don’t really remember what my answer was when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up. Most children – perhaps today’s children as well – would answer ‘I wanna be a doctor’. My parents are the type of parents that don’t push their children – me and my big brother – to do something we both didn’t like. Yes they pushed me hard to study during the school years, but not after that. When I was growing up, I had no idea what I wanted to be. When I was in high school, I even asked my mom what major should I sign up to at the college? Which path should I take? I remembered that I was already into Korea when I was in high school, I asked mom should I take Korean major? Because I was not so sure about that. But then mom replied : ‘just choose what you like (enjoy) to do, because you’re the one who will do , start, and finish it.’ Not helping at all. Finally I signed up in Hotel Management. Years passed, I graduated from my alma mater, still I didn’t know what to do,, what I liked to do. I felt lost somehow.

Then the adventure began. After graduation I enjoyed living in foreign country as an Aupair*) for a year just to know their culture and get foreigner friends.

After a year I came back to homeland with no plans at all and coincidentally I got chance to work in one of my Aupair friend’s school. With my only experience of being an Aupair, I got the job as teacher. Was it nepotism? Probably.. After a year, then again coincidentally I got info from a friend of mine at college that the company she worked at opened vacancy for their new Team. I tried to apply the vacancy, then I joined the new Team! I told myself at that time : at least this was according to my degree. Year and a half later, I decided to resign and move to a work place that was nearer to the house, once again I got accepted in a school environment, but at that time as not a teacher. I spent another year and a half in that school. I like challenge and don’t like to get paid for do nothing – it doesn’t mean I did nothing for a year and a half in that school, but only less challenging for me – so that is my reason why I moved (again) to hospitality industry after a quiet, silent year and a half in the school. Exactly 33 months later, I decided to resign, again, and it was coincided with the first lockdown of covid-19 breakout. More or less a year later, Ms Gaby contacted me and here I am now 😊

If you wonder why I never once worked at the hotel after I graduate, I wonder why too! I feel sorry to my parents who paid for my college tuition but I ended up working in somewhere else other than hotel. I thought what am I doing all these time? Am I doing the right thing? I wonder about myself a lot. That was before Mr Gani’s training session on 8 Feb 2022 – and thanks to one of Mr Gani’s principles of balancing career and life – which was be flexible, your career path will change - then I feel less lost.

If you see the diagram there is number 4, Pak Gani said it was the ideal career. I feel that I am exactly at number 4 now. Is this my ideal career in Playtics? I don’t know yet. But at least I don’t feel underpaid, or unhappy, or stressed here. I feel so happy, the reason why I sleep late (little bit a lot) is because K-drama or other movie or playing games, not because I don’t want morning to come too early to start working. Be happy. This is really important to upkeep our mental health. Yes I’m an adult, and yes I was unprepared, but I’m sure I’m pretty good at keeping myself not to be unhappy or stress at work place.
